Calgary Herald: "Heartland giving back to High River with set visit, auction for flood relief"

This article is in the Calgary Herald today:

"The Alberta-produced CBC hit Heartland will be giving 1,000 fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the series on Saturday while raising thousands of dollars for flood relief in High River.

Tickets for Heartlanders for High River, which will be held Saturday afternoon at the Calgary studios of the series, sold out in just over 24 hours after news spread through Facebook, Twitter and on the Heartland blog.

Fans paid $25 for tickets. There will also be a live auction, with 10 unique lots that fans across North America can bid on.

“We had no idea what to expect, honestly,” said executive producer Jordy Randall. “We had suspicions that it (Heartlanders for High River) might go quickly. But I have to say I was certainly surprised it was 24 hours. I could see a week, but 24 hours was stunning.

“It’s a real testament to the fans of Heartland, who are so passionate . . . I only wish we could accommodate more people. We had to figure out what we could do well and deal with properly. I wish we could have had 10,000 people.”

Producers of Heartland do not release the exact location of its Calgary studios to the public, but ticket holders will get four hours on Saturday to tour the facilities and participate in other events. Jody Seeley of Sun Country Radio will hold a one-hour Q&A session with stars Amber Marshall, Michelle Morgan, Graham Wardle, Chris Potter and Alisha Newton. Fans can meet up with Heartland’s horses, including Spartan, Harley, Copper, Phoenix and Paint, and check out sets and props.

Fans will also get a chance to win a walk-on role in an upcoming episode of Heartland.

On Friday, a live auction will be set up through the Heartland blog (cbc.ca/Heartland/blog), which is open everyone.

Heartland, now shooting its seventh season, films in Calgary, Millarville and High River.

In particular, fans will recognize Maggie’s Diner, which is a frequent location for the show.

That building, like much of High River, was deluged by massive flooding in late June. Randall says the show’s crews have been working to get that particular set back up and running.

“We’ve had several episodes that were supposed to have scenes take place at Maggie’s Diner in High River that were rewritten to take place elsewhere to allow the episodes to be produced on time,” Randall says. “We’re hoping to back in there in the next few episodes so we can pick up that storyline. But it’s had an impact on us.”

Those wanting to donate to High River flood relief can make out cheques to High River Disaster Relief Fund and mail them to Heartlanders for High River, Rescued Horse Season 7 Inc., Building F-1, 2950 Hochwald Ave. S.W, Calgary, Alberta, T3E 7H5."

"What does Brian Dunne do? Well, when there are still Hudson scenes to film, Heartland's Locations Manager has had to be creative."

"And no, if the call sheet confuses anyone, 707 is not titled "Small Tent." That is where the read through is taking place. :)"

"A working lunch for many as episode 707 is being read through for the next block's director, Chris Potter, aka Tim Fleming. #iloveheartland"

"At the dude ranch for the whole day today; days are better without a move in the middle of them. #iloveheartland"

"Back on set, someone quits, and then in the next scene the same person gets hired. Ah, shooting out of order is fun. :)"

"It's day 13 of 15; we are that close to getting 1/3 of Heartland's 7th season filmed. #iloveheartland #CBC #behindthescenes"

"Most scenes today from 706, except one, from 705, described as "tension at dinner." No, Tim isn't in the scene. #iloveheartland"

"Chris Potter, who directs the next 2 episodes, is having lunch with 1st AD Andy Price and DOP Craig Wrobleski, getting ready for Monday. :)"

"For weeks construction has been building a new set, and now we finally are going to film in it - 4 full scenes. #iloveheartland"

"So that's pretty well it for 705/706. Thanks to director Jim Donovan. On Monday Chris Potter takes the reins for 707/708. #iloveheartland"

High River Times:"Heartland hosts fundraiser to help the towns rebuilding process"

$

Wow, more than 65,000 $ were raised at saturday`s Fundraiser! Go Heartlanders!!

And let me put up a Spoiler Alert for this article because a Season 7 storyline is mentioned. All I am saying is, it is not about Tim ;)

"As the town of High River rebuilds and normality is instilled once again into the devastated community, one pivotal aspect of the town did their part to help the rebuilding process.

The hit Canadian TV show Heartland held a fundraiser Saturday at their Calgary set location to raise money for recovery efforts in the Town of High River.

For Jordy Randall, executive producer for the show, the relationship between the town and the show has gotten closer and closer throughout the many years of working together.

“It’s just been this fantastic relationship where we’ve loved being there and High River has accepted us with open arms,” said Randall. “When the flood happened the next morning everyone was thinking on how we could give back to High River because High River has been so welcoming to us.”

Maggie’s Diner, which is situated in the downtown core of High River, served as one of the main sets for the show for seven years, but was completely devastated in the flood.

“We’re still a number of weeks away, I’m not sure if it’ll be a month, it’s really hard to say. We’re hoping that in the next couple of episodes we’ll be able to get back there,” said Randall.

Since the set was inaccessible, writers for the show had to adapt on the fly and change story lines in order to suit the recent situation.

“As head of the writers department I will tell you it was a bit of a shuffle. It’s the year that Lou buys Maggie’s. It was a huge thing for the show because we had intended on being there even more (than usual),” said Conkie. “We still have Lou working at Maggie’s but we talk about it rather than see it.”

The event was pulled together in a matter of two and a half short weeks and tickets sold out literally over night.

“We sold 1000 tickets within 24 hours all over Canada and even in parts of the States,” said Heather Conkie, executive producer for the show. “People are coming from all over and the line keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

The event hosted a number of bands, including Calgary based band the Rustic Brothers, singer Tom Jackson and the Honeybadgers, which has many of the crewmembers as the musicians.

A live auction also took place to help raise funds, and items such as outfits worn by cast members, autographed merchandise, WestJet and Delta Hotel getaways were sold to fans with all proceeds going towards the town.

The item with the highest bid, a tour of the ranch set in Millarville for six people sold for an incredible $10,000.

The cast and crew of Heartland wanted to lend a hand to the town of High River in the best way they could since the town and the show have a long history together.

Gordon Imlach, series publicist, mentioned that cast and crew had been in High River only two days prior to the flood.

“We were just sick to our stomachs when we heard, and so the first thing we thought was, ‘we have to do a fundraiser,’” said Imlach.

The support the show has offered for the town of High River was far from unnoticed at the event. Mayor Emile Blokland shared some of his experiences of the flood and shared great thanks to all those supporting the town.

“I really want to thank all of you people that are here today. Thank you for coming out and giving the Town of High River the support that we need. Yes money is important, but we also need that emotional support. And seeing all you folks out here today and seeing you supporting this means a great deal to all of us in High River,” said Blokland.

The fundraising event raised more than $65,000 but a final dollar amount has yet to be confirmed.

“I cannot believe the overwhelming support we’ve received. People are buying our posters and t-shirts and the auction items are going for great amounts and I’m really happy we’re able to do this for High River,” said Imlach."
